Alliance for Racial Justice Away Day: Standing Firm Together Against Racism

In November, the Alliance for Racial Justice united 32 dedicated participants for a two-day residential away day in Birmingham. Voice4Change England’s Director, Kunle Olulode, and Deputy Director, Dr Sharmin Shajahan, represented V4CE at this vital gathering, where sector leaders addressed the urgent threat of rising far-right influence, toxic narratives in politics and media, and the ever-present barrier of limited resources and capacity.

Throughout the away day, participants engaged in honest, strategic dialogue about an increasingly challenging social and political climate. By reflecting together, Alliance members recognised that the collective purpose must go further than the impact of any individual organisation. They reaffirmed the importance of the Alliance as a collaborative force that advances racial justice by influencing government policy, amplifying shared expertise, and advocating for stronger representation of regions outside London.

Key discussions emphasised the urgent need for closer collaboration, transparent sharing of information, and unity against divisive forces seeking to fracture communities. Members called for better inclusion of voices from the North and outside of London, recognising that true solidarity and change require every community to be heard and empowered. Concrete next steps were agreed, including revising the Alliance’s terms of reference and broadening membership to reflect the sector’s diversity and strength. The structured sessions led to in-depth materials that will serve as the foundation for a shared Theory of Change to guide the Alliance’s strategy moving forward.

Dr Shajahan reflected, “I left the Alliance for Racial Justice Away Day energised and inspired, ready to commit time and expertise to shaping the Alliance’s shared vision for racial justice. I especially enjoyed the informal networking with new organisations over dinner and look forward to working collaboratively with partners across the country to drive meaningful and lasting change.”

Participants appreciated the time to reflect, connect, and plan, all in the supportive environment made possible by the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation.

The conversations were profoundly relevant to the current national climate, where political discourse around race and immigration remains fraught. As difficult as the work may be, celebrating success remains essential. At the heart of these efforts is a shared understanding: lasting change begins by keeping communities central and meeting their needs with hope, transparency, and collective strength.
